A holiday golfers + + Agenda: – Northern Portugal Tour
Introduction: –
Last year was our first trip to Porto in the north of Portugal, through one week cruise on the Douro River, brilliantly organized by PortGolf. At the end of the week, Peter Evens, who heads PortGolf suggested that to return for the feast of S. Juan and maybe play some golf. This seemed a good idea so we returned to the UK we have organized a dinner for two other couples, one of which (Gerry and Catriona) had played golf all over Porto and Jim and Margery. We discussed the idea and agreed that eight would be a good number. Shortly after we had the dinner with another couple, John and Marion who volunteered to join us. None of us had never took a vacation together before it would be a test of friendship. Due to other commitments Gerry and Catriona and John and Marion would stay for a week, while Jim and Margery would stay for twelve days.
There follows a journal of that journey: –
Thursday June 21: –
We decided to take the first flight of Porto Gatwick at 6:30 while the others were reaching 13:30 flight. We were greeted at the airport in Oporto at 9 am by Peter Evens, who took us off the four-star Hotel Fenix is conveniently located near the area Boa Vista. The weather was bright with a light rain around noon. Having unpacked in our large room on the ninth floor with stunning views a cemetery and the city really great we got off our first adventure to walk from the center of the city and explore the area. We had a lunch of pasta and wine at the restaurant Simbiose (€ 30) overlooking the river and saw the boats port wine movement of people from here to there. We walked uphill to the hotel to call in the local supermarket gin and whiskey nightcap. The rest of the band arrived at 18:15 a bit late due to delays. Having checked in all got into the elevator to travel to the 9th plant. However, this lift is a warning that says it is for 10 people – unfortunately, relate to 10 Portuguese people to become somewhat smaller in stature than 8 British to the elevator down to -5 decided floors before coming to a close with a resounding blow. Not exactly the start we were looking for, but we managed to extract ourselves and walk back to the ground floor we proceeded to ride the elevator lift and the second – time for a drink! Peter met us at the bar at 8 pm, when we took two vehicles to Maria Moita, a local restaurant for dinner port. Peter was on the understanding that not much English is spoken and take pictures of the night. Fun food with an interesting menu and wine decanters. 11.30 Bed a bit exhausted.
Friday June 22: –
Up at 8.15, dry, but gray with a hint of blue. Breakfast, then a quick glance at local stores. Peter and Paul picked 12.30 for the first round of golf at Wake.
The course is located one hour from the center of Oporto on the Atlantic coast. The drive was pleasant and informative and entrance guarded by two automatic doors. A drink and a toasted sandwich started the event was a four ball better ball with husbands wives association. Normally for a link of the course, the wind was blowing like hell and was a contributing factor to the round of take 4 hours. Gerry and Catriona were winners and lots of gin & Tonic and beer was consumed. The shower and change before it moved out of Casa do Frango in a nearby town – the problem was our driver dropped us in the wrong place which held the proceedings, but did not stop flowing wine before the chicken and chips arrived – turned out to be a fun night and proven ability of some people alcohol consumption. On our return to the hotel John and Marion joined us in our room for a drink and left at 1:30 am.
Saturday June 23: –
Up at 8.30 am and a glorious summer day. Everyone in the center of the city and its monuments, but for us it was shopping for the prizes to meet with the band at the Majestic Café – 'rather than' to see – Coffee and cognac was the order of the day. Off to lunch to Foz in Praia da Luz, a wonderful restaurant on the beach who had tried last year – good food and wine with a variety of local dishes, ridiculously less than 30 € per couple. Back to the hotel at 16:00 to rest before the evening activities. At midnight Porto celebrated the feast of S. Joao.
Peter and the cab at 21:10 and we gathered led us to Taylor's Port Wine Lodge where the atmosphere is electric – a couple hundred people are sitting at round tables a menu of Kale and Potato Soup, bread, sardines, roast goat and vegetables followed by almond cake and ice cream. The best wines are served and we tried a couple of bottles of 20 years Oporto age. The Gaia lodge is located on the south side of the river Duero and 12:05 a.m. adjourning to the terrace to watch a fireworks display over Porto I was out of this world – we are all surprised by the magnificence of the scene. John and Marion have to leave by taxi due to the cascade of Juan Achilles heel, while the rest of us have to walk as no vehicles are allowed in the area other than for medical reasons. The crushing is worse than a Cup final at Wembley, but everyone world is so great mood and it seems that all the inhabitants of Porto are knocking on the head with a hammer or a long plastic garlic plants (both old traditions) – finally staggered across the bridge, which had been closed at one point because too many people making it to crumble. Street parties, dancing and singing all the way back to the hotel and to bed at 3 am, having survived a fun adventure.
Sunday June 24: –
Up for breakfast, lots of orange and black coffee seemed the agenda. Later collected to go to the golf course Amarante another hour by car. It seems that we the course to ourselves. It is said to hills, indeed, hard to find, sometimes round, and some spectacular explosions accompanied holes all afternoon as S. Joao continues to be celebrated. The men face the ladies on this occasion, the men had no chance. Showered and changed into a restaurant in Amarante – problem was Our driver seemed to have forgotten until it was informed by Pedro via mobile phone, then proceeded to drive at 120 kph to get back on track. No English spoken at all in the restaurant that made life a bit difficult. Food very nice, but seemed to be in a calmer mood – to our age late nights can wreak havoc on some people's constitution.
Monday June 25: –
Today we are moving the Oporto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club, so pack your bag as long as six of us on an adventure – a day trip in a boat on the Douro. Gerry and Catriona have done this trip before so again Estela for golf. Great weather and the trip is well with breakfast and lunch and the river is so calm. We friend Lourdes, who is the tour guide. Later he is surprised to see us drinking champagne – you ask what we are celebrating, we say a birthday, which asks birthday is and we say we do not know, but we're sure it's someone's birthday somewhere. We arrived at 16:15 and Régua taken by bus for about 200 meters Train Station where we will continue our adventure by train back to Porto trip takes approximately 2 hours. Pedro brings us together at the station and leads to our new headquarters in the OC & LTC a small oasis in the center of Oporto. Very colonial style and everyone is so kind. The shower and change and meet for drinks in the lounge before walking a couple of hundred meters down the road to Capa Negra February 1 local restaurant where they serve for Olivetti that speaks good English and advises on local dishes. A lot of wine and an evening of fun for all the princely sum of € 30 per couple. John and Marion insist on having a drink in our room – one night later.
Tuesday June 26: –
Breakfast at 9 am then walked around the grounds and inspected the club's tennis courts, cricket field (thought we would leadoff hitter) and the pool. We are preparing for golf and soon we were on our way to Ponte de Lima in a beautiful sunny day. Once again in an hour's drive field golf, but very picturesque little mountain buggies – a necessity. Beverages and a snack first, but he need not rush to these places was a good job as the round took more than five hours, something we are not accustomed to, but we are on holiday so what the hell. A quick shower and drink before leaving the restaurant Comes. A limited menu and very costly for the region, but we had. He drove back to club and home by 12:30 a.m. – A long day.
Wednesday June 27: –
Up at 8.15 good shower and a good breakfast. Today is a day of relaxation in which all do our own thing. A day in the pool for some, the purchase of some of the ladies and the bridge for others. They all meet in the bar at 8 pm this evening we are eating in the club room, fine dining and awards. Everything went well that everyone has won a class and Margery and Jim won Peter Evens "PortGolf" prize for the best score in the Index running a hole in all the courses we play. Food, wine, service and ambiance could not be better a fantastic finish for those leaving the next day. A little late to bed!
Thursday June 28: –
We said goodbye and Catriona lost Gerry, but they got Marion and John who were taking a later flight. Today Peter is taking Margery and Jim and for us a road trip to the Douro Valley Tour. We left at 21:45 again with glory sun. Our first stop is in the hold of the Quinta de Aveleda.
A guided tour and cheese tasting. We wander round the grounds that have beautiful gardens including resident peacocks. At the store, a loud American with his mouth, he was buying a six pack of wine, boasted to the girl at the counter back home who had a thousand bottles of wine – the She replied: "And now you have a thousand and six, sir." – Priceless!
Our next stop was to see Amarante famous bridge and a quick tour of the city, very pretty. In most rolling hills filled with vines for Regua and stopped for lunch at the Pousada. Sat outside in the glorious sunshine and admired the views across the valley. We went to Quinta do Panascal – Fonseca-port warehouse shelter, had a guided tour of the terraces of grapes with the help of an audio tape and headphones give a history and operation of the company. Back to the hostel for more tasting, then a trip back through Vila Real through miles and miles of vines laden mountains, from top to bottom. Back to the club of the shower and change before Peter left us in the restaurant of Oporto. We were intrigued to see all start Jim as he had ordered "fish soup in the pantry. (The mass was on top!)
Friday June 29: –
Breakfast at 9am – now we're back Estela golf course, but what a difference, loads of sunshine and no wind. Girls against boys (yes, of course girls won, but only 18) – back to the club for a rest and shower.
A special night when we met Peter's wife, Anabela, for the first time and we're going to Praia de Luz for dinner. A great meal with lively conversation and a beautiful sunset, which we have several pictures if anyone wants a copy. Home to bed a day longer.
Saturday June 30: –
Despite the sunset last night, we awoke gray skies and much colder temperatures. The girls, (I use the term loosely) go shopping at Vila Nova de Gaia, "English Court." We do our own chaps I read and see the members are doing to eat barbecue – Jim is sardines. Margery Lorna and arrive back at 14:15 and after the hearing of his adventures to take tea and scones – how civilized.
Pedro picked us up at 18:45 as we are to have a drink in his house in Senhora da Hora. We met with Anabela again and Jacquay later with one of his twin daughters entertained us on the piano. Then we are faced with a fish restaurant, O Manel in Matosinhos – English spoken and do not fight with the menu, not the best place to eat in our opinion, it is also quite expensive. An early night for everyone.
Sunday 01 July: –
A day off – the time a little gray and not very hopeful. Margery and Jim decided to tour the city while we decided to open-top bus walk to the Crystal Palace Park which houses a large circular building for concerts, there are some good views of the river and throughout the city. We continue our Walk to the metro station S. Bento, where he tries to buy a machine with two entries a day – that fail miserably despite the help of a couple of locals, but were rescued by a station security guard who helped us buy the correct entries. The subway is very modern and is a cross between a tram, a trolleybus and a subway car – very clean and quiet. Out first trip takes us through the top of the Ponte do Luis and to the final destination outside "English Court." Back down, but get off at Jardim do Morro, where we have been informed that there are some good photo opportunities across the River. Then you decide to walk over the top Bridge into a walkway. In retrospect, this was not a good idea because it calculated that the bridge is similar in construction and the height of Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia – not walking through that even if they do chain to the railing so what on earth are we doing here? So being English, we put our heads down and just keep walking until, somewhat relieved, we reached the other side – whew! I have to add that Metro trains are going through just inches distance tends to add to the excitement. We did get some good photos of trains crossing the bridge and enter the tunnel below us. With trembling legs descend hundreds of steps and winding alleys to reach the river bank where he had a bottle of wine and lunch and the audience in the world go by. We returned to the station and came to the Estadio do Dragao, recently completed a stage before returning back to our station closest to the house, the Casa da Musica ". Time was much improved in that time so he returned to the club in the sun.
We met with Margery and Jim poolside and sharing stories and adventures then dozed for a while before getting ready to embark for our last night to "Caffeine" Restaurant. A very clever setting and good food, but again it would not be in our top five. Peter is collected and returned back to us with certainty the club.
Monday 02 July: –
A wonderful attribute of the club is that customers are not forced to leave their rooms until noon. We took advantage of this by having time to pack at a leisurely pace and have kept our bags were collected by Peter to take us to lunch at Rio Ar ", a modern restaurant in Riverside Cais da Gaia. We sat inside by an open wall looking across the river Douro by glorious sunshine. Peter is collected and led us to Puerto Crofts Wine Lodge for a tour and tasting – a nice way to end a holiday in Porto.
We collected our luggage from the club, said our goodbye to staff and Peter left us at the airport in time for the flight which was delayed for fifty minutes.
All in all a most enjoyable holiday, well organized by PortGolf as Peter Evens whose care and attention their customers is unmatched.
We will certainly return again to this most interesting of cities.
