Going on a safari in South Africa
South Africa continues to enjoy enormous goodwill tourists from around the world. Trips to longer haul destinations fell last years, this country experienced an enviable 6.5% growth, according to the World Tourism Organization. The growth was jump started by the transformation heralded by the demise of apartheid and the beginning of democratic rule in 1994. apartheid policies of racial discrimination protected by Act offended enlightened opinion in many parts of the world. And the enemies of these policies in place a very effective campaign against the visit to South Africa. It came to be that South Africa, a destination truly superior in every way, remained hidden to many until the dark cloud of apartheid happened.
The safari wildlife is a key element in the South Africa tourist menu. Those who chose to see Africa's wildlife here will not be disappointed. The game is excellent viewing experience top rated Kruger National Park and other ballparks highly regarded in the country. Wildlife is protected in more than 300 public and private game and nature reserves. SANParks (South African National Parks) manages 20 national parks across the country.
Kruger is the place to see big game especially the "big five" of buffalo, elephants, lions, leopards and rhinos. Most other parks have specialized in the conservation species or are identified with specific animals. Greater Addo National Park, for example, is the only place you find elephants in the Cape region. Some of the parks along the 3000 km coastline host whales and dolphins.
South African policies wildlife conservation are advanced and highly successful. An initiative guidance wildlife sanctuaries across international borders cut hopes to repeat this success elsewhere. This is in recognition of the fact that wildlife no respecter of territorial delimitation agreement between men. transboundary conservation areas have been identified in six regions along the borders with Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique.
In southern Africa, the best places to see wildlife is in private reserves Hunting and national parks. The private game reserves are not as comprehensive as the publicly owned national parks. Its key selling point is the superior accommodation and save together personal visits. The national parks on the other hand are very popular with tourists without a driver. They offer accommodations in a limited number of areas closed off, in Rondavels thatched bungalows and villas. Tour companies also offer packages, including transport and guide in the national parks. See our South Africa Tours for more details and booking one of our safari packages offers.
South Africa is home to numerous species of terrestrial animals, including the celebrated "five great "- rhino, buffalo, lions, leopards and elephants. The majority of the members of the five big league, no doubt, are charismatic. But this is not why so named – otherwise it would be the request that the buffalo be ejected. The reason is that these are the first animal safari hunters found more difficult. The idea of watching wild animals without killing had not gained wide acceptance below. The practice of killing arrogant animals as a sport is very unpopular today with those who value the right to life and dignity of animals as full members of our planet.
Besides the unpleasant aesthetics, hunting causes a bad relationship between man and animals. Let me illustrate this with an incident narrated to me by a guide on a visit recently to a country (not South Africa) that allows hunting. The guide recalled an occasion when taken by surprise to see an elephant charging in your car. This was contrary his experience with elephants in the region. This unusual behavior arose because hunters had wounded the elephant. The elephant in later treated with vehicle and humans as enemies. It is unfortunate that otherwise stellar South African conservation policies, allow the practice of hunting in certain areas.
Game viewing is done from the comfort of a vehicle, with one foot, horseback, camel and canoeing safaris are increasingly popular. To view game any of these modes is required to be accompanied by an armed ranger. Full blood adventure types think that watching game aboard a vehicle is for wimps. safaris are designed to walk so resilient souls. And is the reason why people reflective SANParks maintain a network of wilderness trails in the parks. The walking safari typically have a maximum of eight people aged 12-60 years and a duration of 2 nights and 3 days. Participants must obviously be physically in shape.
Without doubt, the best place to see wildlife, especially the "big five" is Kruger National Park. This is the flagship park South African national. The Kruger was created in 1898 and owes its existence to the vision of Paul Kruger at one time president of the Transvaal Republic that later became part of the Union of South Africa. He was ahead of its time in recognizing the need to create a sanctuary to preserve and protect wildlife. Even now was clear that the hunter with his rifle in the near annihilation of all animals.
Kruger offers a diversity of animals unparalleled anywhere else in South Africa. Besides the big five, some of the interesting games you find here include – hippos, jackals, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wild boar, numerous species of antelopes, cheetahs, wild dogs and spotted hyena. The park is home to over 140 mammals and 500 species of birds. Kruger spans nearly 20, 000 miles virgin bush square marked by mopane trees and acacias. The botanic biodiversity is vast and over 336 species of trees are found here.
Accommodation within Kruger is provided in self-catering rest camps that offer good accommodation but basic. There are also some smaller cottages and bush Bushveld camps offering more luxurious stay. Accommodation ranges from rondavel huts and safari tents to family bungalows and cottages and luxury guest houses. In addition, There are caravan and camping tents in some of the rest camps. Most camps are supplied with electrical power and telephone. Other Facilities include shops, kitchen facilities, restaurants and gas stations.
Kruger has 3,000 kilometers of road network in good condition and is ideal for those seeking an experience without a driver. The park is relatively inexpensive and easily accessible. It is therefore very popular and attracts over 600,000 visitors a year. It is, in particular, gets very crowded during the holidays in July and December. Since there is a maximum number of vehicles allowed in the park every day, you are well informed to make preparations in advance if you plan to visit next. game viewing is good year, but the best time will be from April to September when the bush is sparse.
Kruger is located 330 km northeast of Johannesburg. If you have no stomach for a long trip, take one daily flight from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit Airport or Kruger / Mpumalanga International Airport. If you want to rent a car in either Durban or Johannesburg South Africa, please visit our rental car reservation. Towards the west and south sides of the Kruger National Park, there are a number of highly rated private reserves hunting. This includes Sabi Sand, Mala Mala and Londolozi reserves Timbavati game. Here are some of the finest game lodges in Africa.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is another unique game sanctuary. This large park is a combination of the two parks in the former Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa. Covering over 36,000 square kilometers, is one of the largest areas of wildlife conservation anywhere in the world. The landscape is marked red sand dunes and sparse vegetation hawthorn. The environment of this park provides outstanding opportunities for unforgettable wildlife photos.
This park is home the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. You'll also see antelope, gazelles, eland, blue wildebeest, cheetahs, wild dogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes and leopards. Birdwatching is also excellent and of 297 species recorded, 96 are residents. The Kgalagadi is not for the fainthearted, it is far from achieving any place and there is a thump. It is located 904 km west of Johannesburg. All accommodation in the park is managed by SANParks. You'll get the best experience if you visit between June and July, when the weather is cooler.
On safari, remember to bring a pair of binoculars to help spot animals. Also carry a camera and other equipment as a means of recording your safari. It is the only way to shut up those who doubt the story of his encounter with African wildlife. Wear sunglasses during a good pair to shield you from glare, especially if you travel to semi desert Kgalagadi. Dressing well means cool clothing (such as light and cotton clothing) for summer and warm for winter.
