Crystals Brown
Recrystallized several times but still left with brown impurities, need white crystals, help!!!!!!!?
In organic chemistry I lab, we had an unknown solid dissolved in dichloromethane. After extractions, washings, and dryings, I recrystallized the unknown solid. It was perfect…I had pure white crystals. However, at the last moment when I turned away for one minute, the wooden stirring rod in my beaker on the hot plate began to burn and caused brownness in my crystals. I recrystallized three times and hot filtrated twice to get rid of the brown. After doing that, I had white crystals, but still had some brown impurities/burnt wood around the rim and in the center of the beaker
I have one week to figure out what to do because this is graded on purity. Should I separate out the brown by hand under a microscope? Should I recrystallize?? What should I do? I don’t watn to lose any more mass then I have to since that is graded as well. Help!!!!
First, I would see if you can do it again.
I would do a hot recrystallization with decolorizing carbon, unless you already tried that with your hot recrystallization.
Worst case scenario scrape out the white crystals and try recrystallizing the impure residue. Keep in mind you’ll want to use much less solvent for this recrystallization.
Next time use a glass stirring rod instead of a wooden stirring rod, or don’t use one at all.
